He has been affiliated with the churches of Christ since birth. His grandfather was active in the church of Christ in Central Texas. His parents were also members of the church.

Charles met and married Audrey (Holmes) in 1974. He attended Sunset School of Preaching from 1975 through 1977 when he began preaching the Gospel full time. He has preached at congregations in Texas, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Indiana and Pennsylvania. He has worked in Chambersburg Pennsylvania since 1994. In addition to graduating from Sunset,

He is a licensed marriage and family therapist and has had a private practice since 2005. He has completed all classwork for a PhD in marriage and family therapy.

His missionary involvement in Zambia began when the Chambersburg congregation became involved in supporting the work of Charles Phiri in Siavonga, Zambia in 1995-1996. In 1998 the Chambersburg church raised funds to build a church building for the Siavonga church of Christ.  In 1999 Charles traveled to Zambia to help dedicate the new building. He was invited back in 2000 and has returned every year since to preach and work for 4 weeks each visit.  In the years since 13 new congregations have been planted and many have been baptized.  85 water wells have been repaired and 13 new wells have been drilled.  Medical efforts have helped many people.

Charles and Audrey have three children, Nathan  and his wife, Sonita, Jessica, and Travis and his wife, Bekah, and six grandchildren.
